    Gender and Health

    Introduction:

In this program the issue taken in to account is health. At the beginning of the program, the concept" what is health?" has been introduced that it includes:

    • Mental health.
    • Physical health.

They tried to find out that is their a gender gap in health issue, if yes then why and how it effects our lives?

    Interviews and ideas:

Interviews with the personalities of related fields are included like with doctors, they are Professor Dr. Syed Haroon, Dr. Rizwana Chaudhary, Dr. Mattiullah Khan, Dr. Khadija Haq, Dr. Sameen Siddique, and Nigar Nazar (cartoonist). Their views are given below:

They said that there are two basic reasons for the physical and mental illness in Pakistan:

    • Over population.
    • Poverty.

    Health of Females:

Nigar Nazar said that 80% women in rural areas are handling animals and cook food on local- made- stoves and use wood as fuel. Animals and wood both are the source of air pollution and spreading of germs.

By 1999 in Punjab, more than 700 deaths of women are recorded due to stove burning.

Dr. Asim told that hepatitis virus is mostly founded in females because they are more exposed to those things which contains such viruses, they do dusting, cooking, cattle bearing etc and catch the germs and viruses very easily due to the secretions of body like through saliva and sweat.

    Health of Males:

Dr. Matti Ullah said that males are also facing many problems of health because of their too much exposure to the outer world, so they catch infection and at the end of the day, that infection also spreads in the whole family. So clean and fresh environment is a need and right of everyone. Health problems are raising day by day because:

    • Lack of health facilities.
    • Lack of sanitation facilities.
    • Lack of pure and clean water.

To solve the above-mentioned problems, basic problems over population and poverty got to be solved. Pakistan stands on 6th number regarding population on the world ranking.

    Information segment:

The following statistical data shows the alarming progress of Pakistan in this regard.

    • For 2,000 people, just 1 doctor is available.
    • For 3,300 people just one nurse is available.
    • Just 19% children take birth under trained medical staff.
    • In Pakistan there is 80 to 100 times much maternal mortality rate then west.

Dr. Rizwana said that in poor families and rural areas, it is a tradition to provide all the health facilities to their sons and ignoring daughters, they even can't get proper food, which ultimately results in the mal-nourishment of these poor ones. Then another issue is the marriages of these mal-nourished girls in early age that is not only a start of their new life but also a start of unlimited health problems for them. All these things create mental disturbances and psychological illness.

Another important thing is the involvement of males in health programs like family planning that is totally neglected. Their involvement is necessary because in our system males are the decision-makers, so no program regarding women health could be successful without male involvement.

    GPO segment:

Screen Shot of Gender WatchLetters regarding gender discrimination are received on SACHET mailing address. People shows their interest and tell that it is a really a thought provoking program and SACHET is getting success in achieving its objective.

At the end of the program hosts announced a gender jumla contest,"what gender means?" and ask people to send their views and understanding of the word gender. They asked them to send their answers on the program mailing address.

At the end hosts give the views. They said that health is equally important for both male and female. Health of both man and woman is necessary for healthy nourishment of our society.

For getting the right information and understanding of health matters, education is necessary.
