    Gender and Print Media

Print media includes newspapers, magazines, books like poetry etc. In this media, whatever is publishing is the responsibility of readers. It depends on what we want to read in newspapers or in books. So basically depends on our own mentality.

    Urdu and English news papers:

Screen Shot of Gender WatchIn our country, Urdu newspapers are much popular and read more as compare to English newspapers. Reason for this is low level of education and illiteracy.

People working for Urdu journalism have not that much exposure to the outer world and as well not very well groomed. So their level of thinking is also not high. They mostly use to spread suspense and rumors even about very serious issues. They portray such thoughts, which create just misconception nothing else especially in case of women.

In crime reporting regarding females, the words they use, and the stories they tell are just the insult of women. They just want to attract people specially males by such commercialization. Same the case is there with show business. The activities of the actresses they focus are only the way to attract and commercialize their paper. The activities of the actresses or other females of the related field, taken as a role model are never real about them. Most of them are rumors. They never establish the role model of woman like of doctors, advocate, working ladies or a housewife. They just deal them as a showpiece to attract other people, never discuss their real problems.

While in English newspapers, the case is somewhat different. Main factor is better education of working people of English newspaper. They have much clear vision and exposure of the world. They mostly take things in reference to global issues. What has been going on there from out side the Pakistan and what has been going on here in Pakistan. Then they project sensitive and serious issues in a very decent manner.

But now Urdu journalism is also improving and take in to account the sensitive issues in serious manner and becoming the headlines of Urdu newspapers.

According to a survey, 98% people's view is that print media has a great influence upon the people and it is responsible for portraying the wrong image of women. In the people who are influencing by media, 98% are children and young ones.

There is also criticism on magazines, storybooks and poetry books. In them the topic is always the beauty of women nothing else. They never give value to the other qualities. Now change is also coming in this field by the struggle of women and some aware people.

We can never be civilized and spend balanced life until we give the due respect and honor to the woman and think her as a human being having equal rights. So it the responsibility of our media to develop such society by providing people knowledge and awareness about the real role of woman.
