    Gender and Family Planning

This program is about the reproductive health of woman and family planning issue. Health is also a social issue, because psychological and mental disorders occurred due to tension and depression. When we talk of reproductive health, the most important issue comes in our mind is family planning.

Right now Pakistan is the sixth populous country among whole world and family planning is the must demand of our present crucial situation of over population.

Screen Shot of Gender WatchDr.Abdul Hakeem has given history of family planning in Pakistan in this episode. History of family planning is as old as Pakistan. In 1943 the total population of Pakistan was near about 3.15 crore which was an alarming situation at that time. In 1953 a group of CSO had started work on this issue in cities especially in Lahore and Karachi. At that time they didn't get any special support from government. Formally in 1960, started by health ministry. Then in 1965 it started it independently and has got high level support. They did there work on the district level also. But the draw back of all these efforts was that never ever the males had been included in this program. In spite the fact that it is male dominating society, nothing can be happened without the will of males in their house hold affairs. That's why these projects were not getting success. After realizing this fact, now involvement of men is considered as must in this program. Now programs are launched for males to provide them information about this sensitive and most important matter.

Mostly people have large families for the reason that they want son, not only one son, more than one. They considered their sons as a matter of social security. It just spoils the health of women.

It is scientifically proved that the gene of male child is transferred from the male, but because of lack of knowledge people give blame women for this.

Another important thing for the success of this program is that the change agents should be selected from their own community where the program has to be launched.

Communication and understanding between the spouses is must. Husband and mother in law are playing a vital role in family planning. So they must be involved in such programs. Awareness and education is needed for this purpose.

Family planning programs are not being successful in Pakistan for few of reasons, on which we all have to work, they are:

    • Poverty.
    • Social injustice.
    • Lack of education.
    • Lack of basic knowledge about reproductive health.
    • High death rate of infants.
    • To consider the male child as social security.
    • Negative attitude of family members.

Another important thing regarding this issue is involvement of religious sector. Family planning program is very successful in Islamic developing countries like in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Iran. It is happened so just because on involvement of religious sector to convince the people for family planning. So here in Pakistan, this important sector must be involved.

People must keep in mind that, if son is a gift of GOD, on other hand daughter is also a blessing of GOD. Keeping this thing in mind, they must give due respect to their daughters and wives, and also cooperate in women health issue for their betterment.
