FAD Advocacy Network (FADAN)

Background

SACHET developed a Tele Magazine show entitled “Gender Watch”. It played a pioneering role in breaking the silence on many gender issues. The program was highly appreciated by the viewers and they suggested through their mails a wide range of social issues that needs to be highlighted or worked on using Tele media. Among those issues the custom and institution of Dowry and Dowry violence was on priority.

It served as a momentum to initiate a different but relevant approach towards Dowry, a gender issue through an Advocacy Project FAD-Fight Against Dowry Project.

Introduction

AGEHI-Advocates of Gender, Education and Health Information Resource Center, launched a five-year advocacy project FAD “Fight Against Dowry” on 26TH November 2001 with the aim to stimulate a thinking process by sensitization and awareness against the institution and practice of dowry & dowry violence in Pakistan.

FAD took some practical steps to take necessary measures towards the realization of the existence of this social evil in our society by breaking culture of silence, promoting positive dialogue and organizing activities to involve youth in the process of advocating the message.

One of the major achievements of the project is the formation of a national level advocacy network to strengthen partnerships with the stakeholders. This would ensure the technical and institutional sustainability of the project besides increasing the outreach, which in turn would serve the purpose of social sustainability. To mark the 3rd anniversary of the project AGEHI Resource Center-SACHET under its five year Advocacy project is organizing the 1st National FAD Advocacy Network (FADAN) workshop for its FAD focal points on 27th November 2004, with the following objectives in mind:

  • To establish a link between women human rights violation and dowry violence.
  • Identify the causes and consequences of gender in equalities-legal perspective.
  • Develop an action plan for their respective communities to raise awareness and sensitization on the issues of human rights, gender equality, violence in the institutions of marriage and dowry and roles of different change agents (media, men, youth groups, clergy etc) in eradicating violence including dowry violence from the society.
